To foster a sustainable and ethical fashion marketplace - that's the mission of Consciously. Maisa Mumtaz-Cassidy, Founder and CEO of Consciously, says it’s her mission to raise awareness of the apparel industry’s long history of exploitation and be a voice for those otherwise unheard.
Maisa's experience in manufacturing in Bangladesh - the second-largest home to apparel manufacturing after China - sparked her interest in sustainability. She saw that nobody was looking out for garment workers, the vast majority of which are female. So, she took the responsibility and created Consciously.
She advises brands to make sure people within the supply chain are paid a living wage. Companies can ask for documentation, talk to workers, use sustainable material, and check factories and conditions. According to her, more demand for sustainable fashion will make it more affordable as well.
In the first half, Maisa talks about:
* Gratefulness for her support system, including her immediate family.
* Overview of the brand.
* What sparked her idea for Consciously.
* Advice for other brands looking for a sustainable marketplace.
* What drives the demand for ethical but affordable fashion.
